National Librarian Day Celebration 12th August 2026
Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV), Shimla, celebrated National Librarian Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian librarian and library scientist, Dr. S. R. Ranganathan on12th August 2026.Various engaging and academic activities were organized by the Library Committee under the aegis of IQAC.
The programme was graced by Dr. Anurita Saxena, Principal, RKMV, as the Chief Guest. The theme of the celebration was “Libraries: Connecting People, Preserving Knowledge, Empowering the Future.” Based on this theme, a declamation competition, bookmark design competition, quiz competition and book exhibition –cum-sale were organized.
Students from the cluster colleges as well as nearby colleges participated enthusiastically in these competitions. The participating cluster colleges included Government College, Sunni; Government College, Kandaghat; Government College, Theog; Centre of Excellence, Shimla and St. Bedes College,Shimla.
The activities were judged by a distinguished panel comprising Dr. I. D. Sharma, Dr. Bhagwati Charan, Dr. Himani Saxena, and Dr. Anjana Bhardwaj. The event provided students with an opportunity to celebrate the significance of libraries and promote reading, creativity, and a deeper appreciation of knowledge and learning.
Addressing the gathering the Principal Dr. Anurita Saxena highlighted the vital role of libraries in connecting communities, preserving knowledge, promoting reading, and empowering learners for the future. She emphasized that while e-resources have expanded access to information, they cannot replace the existence and value of physical libraries and books. She also highlighted the significant role of librarians as curators and custodians of knowledge, who guide readers, preserve valuable resources, and facilitate meaningful access to information.
The celebration was a meaningful effort to promote reading habits, encourage creativity, and remind students of the lasting value of books and libraries.
